Merge Brings IBM Watson Imaging Clinical Review to Market
The first cognitive solution from Watson Health's medical imaging business, IBM Watson Imaging Clinical Review, is generally available to healthcare providers as of today. We at Merge are proud to have collaborated on this innovative new solution and are excited to be among the first organizations to bring it to market for healthcare provider organizations.

Watson Imaging Clinical Review is the first step in our commitment to provide impactful imaging solutions that address complex medical problems. Healthcare providers face these every day on behalf of the patient populations they serve.

Watson Imaging Clinical Review is a cognitive data review tool. It helps create a more reliable patient record to drive accuracy in quality reporting and billing processes. Doing so is clinically important because reliable patient records help provide a consistent picture of the patient to everyone involved in his/her care: from the primary care doctor, to the specialist, to the emergency department physician.

EMR systems are intended to improve patient management and system analytics; however, the results can be disorganized, incomplete, and inconsistent. A clinical diagnosis does not always transfer correctly into the problem list and recorded diagnosis in the EMR.  Pieces that get missed can create problems at the patient and system level. As the shift towards value-based care gains momentum, it is clear to me that healthcare providers must be empowered to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of their reporting within the broader healthcare system.

Watson Imaging Clinical Review improves the path from diagnosis to documentation, eliminating data leaks caused by incomplete or incorrect documentation. This innovative cognitive data review tool supports accurate and timely clinical and administrative decision-making by:
  • Reading structured and unstructured data
  • Understanding data to extract meaningful information
  • Comparing clinical reports with the EMR problem list and recorded diagnosis
  • Empowering users to input the correct information back into the EMR reports

Watson Imaging Clinical Review enables reconciliation of inconsistencies between clinical diagnoses and administrative records. Those inconsistencies can impact billing accuracy, quality metrics, and an organization's bottom line.

This initial release of Watson Imaging Clinical Review is focused on Aortic Stenosis which affects 1.5 million Americans and occurs when the aortic valve in the heart is narrowed. This impedes blood flow to the rest of the body and causes shortness of breath, tiredness, and chest pain. If a cardiologist's report indicates a diagnosis of aortic stenosis, Watson Imaging Clinical Review helps verify that this diagnosis was propagated into the electronic health record into places like the patient's problem list and recorded diagnosis.

Aortic Stenosis is only the beginning of the important journey to wide-ranging cognitive medical imaging innovation we are undertaking at Watson Health. Significant progress has been achieved with more than 25 clinical and industry members of the Watson Health medical imaging collaborative who are tackling breast, eye, and brain conditions in addition to the cardiac work that served as the foundation for Watson Imaging Clinical Review.

The cognitive future for medical imaging in healthcare begins today.
